My Projects
Capturing a moment or impression is at the heart of my artwork. I thrive on immersing myself into a landscape or a experience; camping in boggy, desolate moorlands or perched atop sheer coastal cliffs. I take great joy in simply putting pencil to paper. Graphite, pen, ink, watercolour, oils and photography all find their place in my work.
Immersive and intrepid, this lifelong project explores dramatic landscape, wild weather, local folklore and fading history. Micro explorations are used to experience historic pathways and collect sketches, photographs and tales of adventure. Artwork is often created with only what can be carried in a rucksack along with tent, fuel, and food. These are smaller travel projects, capturing flashes of culture and people from all walks of life. The most recent has been the Isle of Harris...
Swift, sure line drawings: pen, graphite, ink, all sketched blind - marks made without looking at the paper, only the subject. This is a collation of interactions and observations from life's daily routine. Passers-by in parks, people on busses, couples in a cafe. Moments when a stranger's life interacts with ours. Observed, recorded, and enjoyed. These sketches and marks are collected in transparent spiral books; one interaction layering over the next, each adding, changing, and building on the next, eventually to be forgotten as you move through the books.
